What Makes Hope Ranch So Special?
There are so many wonderful areas of Santa Barbara, and one of the special ones is Hope Ranch. Nestled North of the Pacific Ocean and just south of the Goleta Valley, this picturesque community is home to a thriving equestrian community among other gorgeous amenities. So what's it like living in Hope Ranch?
The History of Hope Ranch
Thomas Hope acquired the land where Hope Ranch now exists in 1861 after moving to Santa Barbara in 1949. Hope used the land for sheep ranching, and his 2 story home served as the headquarters of Hope Ranch Park until 1962. In 1977, his widow sold 2,000 acres of the land to a consortium of railroad investors that wanted to construct a massive hotel. Instead, the owners decided to subdivide the land for the construction of villas in 1900.
In 1925, Harold S. Chase organized a syndicate known as La Cumbre Estates Corporation that purchased the 1,200 acres situated west of Las Palmas and Roble Drives and the agricultural land located south of Hollister Avenue. The Land was developed into the residential area that exists today, and the first homes were "Las Terrasas" built in 1925 as the home of Harold S. Chase and "Florestal" built in 1926 for Peter Cooper Bryce.
Life In Hope Ranch
Living in Hope Ranch is quite a privilege. With stunning views of the ocean that are gleaned from the hilly topography of the area, it is an ideal place to raise a family. Buying property in Hope Ranch often involves looking into sprawling estates and horse farms that support the equestrian way of life. It is a quiet spot in a busy state, but also one of the most exclusive communities in Santa Barbara. Residents, both current and former, have included some of the most powerful and wealthy families in The United States.
The area is kept safe by the Santa Barbara County Sheriffs and the "Hope Ranch Patrol" which is not officially affiliated with law enforcement but serves as a sort of neighborhood watch orgnization.
In fact, some of the big heroes of the screen have lived here, including Ron Ely (Tarzan), Fess Parker (Davey Crockett, Daniel Boone), and of course, Snoop Dogg.
Homes in Hope Ranch
In addition to being one of the most expensive neighborhoods in Santa Barbara, Hope Ranch is one of the wealthiest areas in all of California. Homes with ocean views can often be listed north of $10 million, and many others sell for between $2.5 and $8 million. The homes, while still maintaining some of the Mediterranean inspiration that the larger area is known for often have more Western influences, given the ranching foundations of the community.
