Savvy Spring Cleaning Tips

Maureen McDermut

Our beautiful spring season is here once again! And while most of us won’t be able to venture far from our homes, we can make the most out of our time indoors to make sure we get our spring cleaning done. Here are a few tips and tricks to get the most out of your spring cleaning.

Make A Schedule

Before you even get started, take a quick look around the home and plan on how you want to tackle your cleaning. Ask yourself which areas need the most work, and remember the spots you skip most during routine cleaning. Those spots would be a good place to start.

Involve the Family

With the imposed shelter-in-place, most of the family will be indoors and just biding time. Maximize their schedule by getting them involved in the spring cleaning process. Make it a fun affair by playing some music when you tackle rooms together. You can also use this time to catch up with each other.

Organize and De-Clutter

Spring cleaning is the best time to get your home organized, as well as help you get rid of clutter you don’t need. De-cluttering makes you more efficient and keeps you organized, and getting rid of clutter also has psychological benefits, as studies have shown that a disorganized home adds to your stress level. Take the time to go through your items, organize your closets (and store away seasonal clothes!), and get rid of old papers and school work.

Do It Room By Room

When doing your cleaning, it will be better and more organized if you section your cleaning by room. Not only is it more effective to deep clean, it also allows you to effectively plan your cleaning since you can space it out over a few days if you don’t have enough time to finish it in one day. Check out this list from Merry Maids which is a good guide on the actions you need to complete for each area of the house.

Less is More

Sure it could be tempting to buy off all the cleaning supplies in the store, but it will only serve to confuse you and add to the clutter once they are no longer in use. Go for the basics, like an all-purpose cleaner plus microfiber cloth towels. If you know how to DIY, you can even make use of natural ingredients to ensure you and your loved ones don’t get exposed to toxic chemicals! Check out these 27 Chemical-Free Recipes you can DIY.

Establish Your Future Cleaning Habits

Once you are done with your spring cleaning, you would want to maintain the sparkling state of your home to make your future general cleaning activities easier. Establish simple cleanup practices for you and the entire household, including small chores, will make keeping your home clean trouble-free.
